East Houston 1912 Project’s vision for an elevated Settegast community isn’t new. In fact, it dates back to March 19, 1910 when Washington Zacharias Haight filed a revised map of east Houston on behalf of a partnership with his fellow investor, Hosiah Quimby. Their plans for east Houston suffered a severe blow with the death of Quimby in 1907 and the later passing of Haight in 1912. Over the next few decades, the neighborhood fell back into the grip of time and Mother Nature. Dirt streets became grassy lanes. Grassy lanes became woods. Time marched on, and the deteriorating state became status quo.
East Houston 1912 Project, with Van Pelt family members at the helm, is dusting off the dream for East Houston, creating a safer, more affordable Settegast community – a project that stalled with the last economic downturn – and reengaging in historic preservation and new urbanism.
The time is ripe to resurrect the 110-year-old vision of Haight and Quimby and lift up the Settegast community, and East Houston 1912 Project is proud to carry the torch of this master planned development to the finish line.
